Making the complex simple is hard…
Hi everyone,
This is just a placeholder post for those of you who want to get an early start. More detail to come when I can sit for more than 20 minutes at a time.
Here is the powerpoint:
You must, with a partner, select one page to explain more fully. Use similar simple language, suitable for late primary school. You may make a poster, blog, video, or other medium to make your presentation. This project will assist in the assessment of “structure”, “number”, “listening, viewing & responding”, and ” managing personal learning”. A rubric will be available shortly.
Good luck,

Hi Sir,
We (Ellayne and myself)choose to do page 25 😀
May 8, 2011 at 8:42 PM
Already approved.
May 8, 2011 at 7:14 AM
Hi sir,
I think I’m willing to have a go at one of the more challenging ones.
Umm, I’m with Manar and I don’t think he’ll mind if we both take Page 27-29
May 8, 2011 at 4:07 PM
Hi Hao & Manar,
That’s a bit too much. You can select the easier page which is 27, or either of 28 or 29.
You may end up “trespassing” on some of the content on page 28 or 29, but it would be better (for you and your results) if you spent your time going into depth with one concept, with examples and applications instead of covering a lot of material.
May 8, 2011 at 6:31 PM
Oh okay in that case we’ll take page 27 then, I just thought they were like grouped cause they’re all pretty similar.
May 8, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Hey sir, can Tia and I do pages 10-12?
May 8, 2011 at 4:09 PM
Hi Andrea & Tia,
You certainly can choose those pages (you are right, those are a unit), but it will be difficult to demonstrate much more that 5.75 in number and 5.25 in structure. I can think of a few ways to stretch up another quartile, but I want to see what you come up with first.
May 8, 2011 at 10:25 AM
hey sir can me and alec choose page 30 to 31? i mean we cant just do one single page, they are both kind of inter-connected? so?
if not, we would like to do page 31 (as a 1st prefrence)
another question, when is this due?
May 8, 2011 at 4:11 PM
Hi Prathu & Alec,
31 it is for you. Date is not concluded yet, so we will see how the class progresses first.
May 8, 2011 at 4:15 PM
yay 🙂
May 13, 2011 at 9:45 PM
hi sir,
for the page 31, what vels level do Alec and I earn for completing it?
May 14, 2011 at 5:15 PM
Hi Prathu,
P31 has the potential to earn beyond 6 VELS levels.
May 8, 2011 at 10:34 AM
my patner and i would like to try 24 0r (21-24)
May 8, 2011 at 8:45 PM
Hi Renata,
I’ll allow you 23 & 24. 21 – 24 is too much.
May 8, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Hi Sir,
Bernice and I chose to do page 25.
May 8, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Hi Elayne & Bernice,
It’s yours. Have fun!
May 8, 2011 at 10:11 PM
Thanks Sir! 😀
May 8, 2011 at 4:52 PM
Hey sir, can Chantelle and I do pages 23-24? We can include basic imaginary numbers and basic number line info, then expand a lot more when we get to sums on a number line. Is that ok?
~ Lauren & Chantelle
May 8, 2011 at 7:01 PM
Yes – that’s fine. Start thinking about what medium you will be using.
May 8, 2011 at 7:10 PM
Hi sir,
I was wondering what the VELS level is for page 20, if its not that high, then William and I will have a shot at page 26.
May 8, 2011 at 8:41 PM
Hi Jurem,
Page 20 offers the potential for up to 6.25 number and 6.00 structure. You could push this further, but not much.
May 10, 2011 at 10:10 PM
ah ok, we’ll do page 20 then.
May 8, 2011 at 8:43 PM
Hey sir could Hayley and I please do page 29?
May 10, 2011 at 5:20 AM
SOLD! One mint copy of page 29 to the lucky students!
May 8, 2011 at 9:31 PM
Hi Sir,
Nini and I would like to choose to do page 29 and also page 19 🙂
May 8, 2011 at 9:33 PM
Would I be able to know the VELS level for page 29?
May 10, 2011 at 5:20 AM
One or the other, please!
May 10, 2011 at 5:11 PM
Page 29 please 🙂
Other people were choosing 2 or more pages so that left me confused..
May 10, 2011 at 6:08 PM
You may do 29, but we will have to talk about the format of your response.
May 9, 2011 at 9:27 PM
Hey Mr,
Josh and I were wondering if the VELS level for Page 20 was high enough and if it isn’t, can we have Page 30 please.
Thanks
May 10, 2011 at 5:18 AM
Hi Damien,
What’s “High enough”? See the reply to Jurem’s comment for VELS levels. If you choose to do the same page, you can’t choose the same response medium.
May 10, 2011 at 9:19 PM
Oh sorry sir, i actually meant Page 19. What VELS level would that be? If it’s below 6.00, i’ll preferably take Page 30.
Thanks
May 11, 2011 at 8:30 PM
Hi Damien,
19 is barely 6.00. You will have to do a good job to gain a 6.00 on that page.
May 13, 2011 at 9:40 PM
Ok then…can i get page 30 instead?
Thank you
May 14, 2011 at 5:16 PM
It’s yours, but you now need to start thinking of what medium you will use for your response.
May 12, 2011 at 6:37 PM
hello sir, i did the manga high, “save our dumb planet” thing…. but i cant get past level 6-7… it tells me to sign up. so i close the pop up to continue playing, but then i have to start again from level 1 😦
May 12, 2011 at 9:04 PM
Hi Prathu – that’s because I have to give you a password!
I’ll drop in on one of your classes tomorrow to give out passwords.
May 13, 2011 at 9:39 PM
hey sir,
i did all the five exercises ( and maybe some more, but that’s not important)…
whats important is that i cant get a gold medal in the 4th exercise, which levels 7-12, quadratics. i have perfect score but for some reason its not giving me the gold medal, is this because of my time(how much time i take to finish one question) or what?
May 14, 2011 at 4:54 PM
Hi Prathu,
Yep, you have to do it fast as well as right…
May 14, 2011 at 7:19 PM
oh damn…. cant get anyfaster, especially when the negative quadratics come up (upside down parabola)…
they need extra time:(
May 15, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Speed comes with practice – you’re not going to give in, are you?
May 12, 2011 at 11:29 PM
Hey Sir,
I’ve chosen page 35. Is it available or has it been taken? If not, could I please pick this one?
P.S: When’s this task due?
Ta.
May 13, 2011 at 9:48 AM
Who are you working with? Remember, it’s a team task!
May 13, 2011 at 5:29 PM
Hi Sir,
I was just wondering for the mangahigh one, what specific games to we do? or play?
May 13, 2011 at 8:30 PM
Hi Bernice,
If you login, you will find I have set a challenge for you!
May 14, 2011 at 5:18 PM
THe specific task is “Save our Dumb Planet”, but you should do as many as you can.
May 14, 2011 at 5:53 PM
Thanks Sir!
May 13, 2011 at 5:59 PM
Hello Sir, Just wondering for the manga high thing, do we have to complete all levels for our names to be put for a bonus point?
May 13, 2011 at 8:30 PM
Of course you have to do all levels!
May 13, 2011 at 8:52 PM
Ok then ill give it a go.
May 14, 2011 at 5:57 PM
Wow my advanced maths class never did stuff like this
i feel so cheated ><
still that's a really good powerpoint
May 14, 2011 at 5:58 PM
also can i have a mangahigh account thing too 😀
May 15, 2011 at 10:31 AM
Ask your Maths teacher 😛
May 14, 2011 at 7:54 PM
lol darren … Go do physics!!! Do resistivity and not complex numbers 🙂
June 5, 2011 at 6:39 PM

June 11, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Hi Sir,
Can we please change from page 25 to page 19?
Thanks.
Ellayne and Bernice
June 12, 2011 at 7:14 AM
OK, but why?
June 12, 2011 at 3:38 PM
Since both pages are connected, we would like to focus more on multiplying complex numbers rather than plotting them in a graph.
June 12, 2011 at 2:22 PM
Sir, next week I am only going to be at school on Thursday as I have an excursion on Tuesday and our only maths lesson is on Thursday. Would I still be able to do the maths test?
June 12, 2011 at 2:50 PM
I am also in this position as well.
June 13, 2011 at 6:50 PM
Thursday is it for all students in this position.
March 9, 2012 at 8:40 PM
This is brilliant G, ties up complex number basics nicely.
Of your own design, or…?
March 10, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Hi Jeeves,
Not my own – it comes from the MAV. I adjusted the powerpoint to suit my own needs.
